This flower is parasitic, growing on a host root or trunk, is sharply colored, has a fleshy body and texture and it can grow up to one meter in diameter.

While enlarging and filling in with black industrial paint the photographs of the gaping gun slugs that were taken out of Yitzhak Rabin's body, Doron Yahalom began recalling the rafflesia flower which he recalled from the Ma'ayan Encyclopedia for Youth.

A hole in the head of the slug that enhanced its murderous power created the miniature objects resembling the flower, photographs of which had appeared in Yediot Aharonot on the anniversary of the assassination and which Yahalom had kept for years in a drawer in his study.

This ready-made miniature, which stood opposite the lens of the camera, appears in its third reincarnation in the decorative, flat opaque drawing of Yahalom. The drawing stretches out over the surfaces of Formica tables from IKEA and broadcasts an alienated and defiant
elegance.

The transparency which characterized the sculpture/outline of Doron Yahalom's space in the eighties and the nineties, was exchanged for large and opaque surfaces. The view that appeared then through outlined space is now blocked and covered over. Instead of an opening in the field of vision to the magical views of the lower Galilee that are visible from Kibbutz Ein Dor, where Doron Yahalom was born, raised, lives and works, the opaque surfaces covered in industrial oil paint appear before the viewer.

One may read Yahalom's transition from sculpted drawings to the opaque surfaces as a transition from modernism to post-modernism. At the same time, clearly the socio-political context of the change in the artist's work calls out for attention. While in the first stage of his career, Yahalom maintained a separation between his political resistance to the occupation and his art, this division is now closed: inner penetration and destruction - the principle governing the bullet and outer expansion and flowering - the principle governing the rafflesia - combine here to create a disturbing visual show.

Irit Segoli

Whisper of Tears
Shuka Glotman

“In the face of a silent, indifferent eternity, we continue to face the camera and say: we were here. We even dare to smile.” (#268, Photography Alive, Meir Publishers)

In “Whisper of Tears”, created in the years since the publication of “Photography Alive”, Shuka Glotman continues to examine the inter-relationship between life and photography that was begun with that book. “Whisper of Tears” draws on discarded, “abandoned” family photographs, which Glotman has amassed over the years in Israel and abroad. Through artistic intervention, Glotman aims to extend the life-span of these photographs, even if only for one moment more.

The exhibition also highlights the instant in which the family photograph – familiar to us since the dawn of photography seven generations ago – goes from being an immediate, vital experience, a validation of existence. The relationship between an ever-growing mass of digital images and life itself is becoming ever more tenuous. Few of the photographs in our computers’ memories will ever be printed, let alone justified by a studious gaze. The plethora of photographs with which we are bombarded diminishes our ability to recognize the rarity of the instant at which the photograph was made. Today, a photographer takes more and more photographs so as to “cover” all angles – on the off chance that one of them might be special. Thus, the act of photographing is becoming a ritual gesture, the product of this act banal, insignificant.

The constant search for the next “photo-op” is impeding our ability to simply live, rather than experiencing life as if it were a reality show. Has it become more fun to photograph life, than to live it?

D.S. From the earliest photographs of Daguerre, to the stunning still lifes of Roger Fenton or the exact arrangements by Le Secq, these images showed us how photographs can 'speak' in a fashion that goes beyond their so called banal and mechanical origins. If we observe Fenton's 'Still Life with Statue, 1860' or 'Tankard and Fruit, 1860', we can perceive that these photographs are not only about successful compositional arrangements or exquisite visual details. Their significance lies in their ability to be a mirror and act as signifiers for the society and culture in which they were created.

It could be argued that the aim of still life in art is to penetrate and subvert the surfaces or physical appearances of the objects which they portray. By this act, still life could create a philosophical and even a metaphysical discourse with reality. Fitting examples are Cezanne's 'still lifes' or Zurbaran's Still-life with Lemons, Oranges and Rose, 1633. Another duality that could be observed in Fenton's still lifes is the interaction of organic and non-organic objects. Objects that are created by nature (i.e. exotic fruits) and those that are man made. In its more abstract level, this interaction alludes to the interaction between nature and culture and it is still a theme that has much relevance in contemporary society.

The aim of this exhibition is to explore earlier themes of still life in art and photography in contemporary contexts or offer arrangements of objects that are stylistically similar to traditional still life. In addition, the exhibition aims to propose a dialogue on photography's ability to address issues that are beyond political scenarios and to present situations in which there are transformations of the photographs' referents. This is the photographic phenomenon of spacing (or as this writer termed it in Hebrew - Mirchov).

It is evident, for example, in Boaz Tal 'The Love of Three Oranges, 1992' and it forces the
viewer to construct his own narrative or speculative meaning. In this manner the presence of spacing acts as a catalyst for the viewer's involvement with the photograph. It is much more personal in scope and can remind us of photography's ability to be more like poetry than just an elaborate descriptive writing. This is the over-riding concern of the exhibition as to demonstrate how photographs can subvert the ordinary objects of their origin into a sublime discourse on reality, the surrounding culture and or as an inner dialogue of their creators with their personal environments.

Anat Michaelis-Levy’s new exhibition presents large-scale, oil-on-canvas works beside dozens of small sketches on grease-proof paper.

The artist has continued her search after 'misleading' memory with large, bursting, flowing compositions juxtaposed with sudden, frozen restraint.

The characters, as appearing in this exhibition’s works, are laying, thinking, dreaming and searching. It is as if these characters have taken position minutes before the industrial paint floods upon them or silently comes to rest beside them.

Fainaru's installation is the core of the exhibition ''Smoke and Ashes'' in Danon Gallery. The exhibition deals with the concept of memory, the absence and loss after the holocaust – the extinction. Fainaru dealt with this theme in previous works which he exhibited in Bar David Museum and in Lehmbruck Museum in Germany.

Read "The Death Fugue" by Paul Celan

D.S. The first work based on that material, a series of three objects titled Verkehrte Ordnung (Topsy-Turvy), brought to light items ordinarily banished to the darkness of the vacuum cleaner bag. The act of inversion, unspectacular in itself, was more than inspiring and the artists couldn’t get rid from obsession with dust. Since 1999 Mop Art is the main focus of the work of Trash/Treasure.

Dealing with dust (as theme and material) Trash/Treasure co-operates with Research Institutions worldwide, especially with NASA. Mop Art consistently draws on the sciences, which also have strong interest in dust, as a key to our past. The scientists already reach for the stars to gather information about our (planetary) history from dust that is millions of years old and unsullied by the human race. Mop Art is inspired by sciences, though not instructed by them.

Mop Art associates with dust – like Hollywood once did - topoi like adventure, treasure hunting, mystery, luck. It expresses the magic of dust and opens the sluices to a universe, whose elusiveness increases in direct proportion to our knowledge of it.

The exhibition in Tel Aviv will focus on two major series of works. On the one hand there is photography and digital painting, that bring dramatic, dynamic, beautiful, mysterious and dangerous aspects of the world of dust to appear. That's one side of the exhibition. On the other hand there is the series of graphic work Rorschach ohne Tinte (Rorschach without ink). For those works the artists searched the floor in their studio for unique fluffs; fluffs looking like a dancer, a bird, a car … This extraordinary fluffs were scanned and mirrored. The picture, that reminds of Rorschach test, is a source of inspiration, interpretation, fantasy - and also of communication. The exhibition will be completed by objects to change the routine of daily life, like the T.T. Dust trap or the Gewicht der Zeit (Weight of Time), that finds its logical continuation in FiX, the ufo with 2 hours of time in it.

D.S. The art and artistry adopted, each in its own way, the palm tree as a creative experiment to culturally integrate into a new Middle Eastern world. Artists such as Reuven Rubin, Nachum Gutman and more interlaced European painting traditions, which combined landscapes and local elements, [with the Mediterranean] and the palm tree became the means of identifying an East / West convergence. The palm tree has also continued to interest artists after the declaration of Israel from second and third generation artists to a younger generation.
Artists such as Israel Rabinovitz use the palm tree as a symbol of the Israeli cultural and social conflict. Maya Cohen Levy discovers within the palm tree an ornamental cycle, and Arie Berkowitz identifies in the palm tree an architectural relationship to the Bauhaus buildings in Tel Aviv.
The exhibition “The Palm Tree in Israeli Art” has been assembled from works by second and third generation Israeli artists and provides a wide facet of experiences on the integration into the Mediterranean terrain through the symbol of the palm tree. The palm tree does not only unite the east and west, but is used as a thread to link the shaping of the Israeli cultural character from the beginning of the 20th century until today. The artists participating in the exhibition: Israel Rabinovitz, Maya Cohen Levy, Boaz Tal, Arie Berkowitz, Belu Simion Fainaru, Ariela Shavid, Yehudit Matzkel, Doron Yahalom, and Zila Friedman.

D.S. Voci maintains a light, flexible approach to gallery installation and has, on past occasions, asked the viewer to figuratively tuck into a "feast" of art.
